When I was just a little boy I can lovingly hark back to sitting on an antique barber chair at the community barber shop and observing my father receiving a haircut and shave. It is not anything like what it is these days. There was an skill to it. The barber really cared about what he was doing and it was clear that my father loved it. Not only that, but the barber shop was where gents could socialize amongst themselves.

The haircuts were always so detailed. My pop would be sitting in one of the numerous used barber chairs while the barber would carefully take his time to provide the picture perfect cut. Most men kept their hair short as that was the way back then. After the hair cut was a shave. This was not a shave as we visualize today, with foam from a can and a synthetic disposable razor. Instead, the lather was applied with a badger brush and a straight blade razor was employed. It looks scary, but it is the cleanest shave you can ever be given. After the shave was the hot towel that every time felt so good.

The men would mostly argue about football or politics, though the subject of women would come up often. It was a time to be at ease and get to know each of us a bit better. Now, when you get a haircut the chatter is kept to a minimum and you commonly attempt to get out as soon as you can.

As I walk by the local barber shop and see the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I question why this custom has mostly vanished from our culture. Do people not appreciate a proper hair cut and shave anymore? Have we all become so anti-social that spending an some time socializing with our friends and neighbors seems like a chore? While I am not one to be angry and only desire for "how things were", I do desire that people will keep in mind and value the way it was just a few decades ago.
