I have always loved models. When I was a child, I collected all manner of them. I had model airplanes, automobiles, boats, trains - you name it I had it. Of course, die cast models were very cool, but my favorites were the ones that you could put together. I had a 1 48 scale-model flying Fortress that was my pride and joy.

When I went to architectural school, I gave it all up. I figured that I couldn't make a career in models, and should do something else that I liked. Little did I realize what awaited me. I in point of fact got a job in architectural model making! If you like working with miniatures and have passable knowledge architecture, this is an amazing field to get into. When I make architectural scale models, I get to make complete miniature worlds. Most of my architecture scale model clients don't want to just have a model of the building that they are proposing. They want a model that shows the whole surrounding area together with the building. This gives context to the vision, and makes it appear as if it has already sprung to life. This is where architectural scale model builders coming in.

One of the interesting things about architectural scale-model making is how pains-taking it's. Despite all the advances of modern technology, there's still only one way to make an architectural scale-model: by hand. Sure, there are some advantages that we have that former generations didn't. The individual pieces of architecture scale models can be stamped out. This saves hundreds of hours of work, because you do not need to cut each piece on its own. However, adapting the architectural blueprint to an architecture scale model, designing the parts, making the molds, trimming the parts, and putting them together, all still have to be done by human hands. No-one has figured out a way to automate the technique.

I'm grateful that they haven't sussed out a way to take the individual craftsmen away from the architecture scale model. This job is a dream come true, and I'm glad it can't be done more effectively by machines. I think it is going to be a very long time before anyone figures out a different way to do it. If it were a matter of mass manufacturing architectural scale miniatures, it would be different. You could create one design and have it created by a piece of equipment. But each architectural scale-model is custom ordered, and so each must be custom made.
