An Extremely Young Couple Appraises Their Heavy Drinking And Their Short And Long-Term Hopes, Plans, And Dreams

Linda and Frank have been dating one another for seven years. They met while enrolled in the same cultural anthropology class at a relatively large, countryside, private liberal arts college located in the Southern part of the United States. While they were mostly good buddies at first, they at long last started dating when they were in their third year of college.

Because both of them came from very conventional backgrounds, neither one of them drank much beyond the experimental stage when they first began dating. As the time passed by, then again, they started to go to more keg parties, sorority and fraternity parties, football bashes, and happy hours. Consequently, they progressively began to drink increasingly more as time went by.

After they graduated, they both landed jobs in a medium size city that was located nearly seventy-five miles from their undergraduate college. Then they eventually decided to move into the same apartment together.

With any substantial change in a person's life there is usually something that causes the specific adjustment in question. For Frank and Linda the idea of buying a new house and having children was this "mechanism of change." In short, for the first time in their lives, Linda and Frank started to critically review their abusive and excessive drinking and the long term negative consequences of alcohol on their lives. As an illustration, they started to wonder if they would ever experience an alcohol overdose due to their heavy and irresponsible drinking.

Would their abusive and heavy drinking adversely affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending so much money on drinking if they were to start saving for a new house?

From a different viewpoint, although neither one of them ever suffered from alcohol poisoning, received a "driving under the influence" arrest, or experienced alcohol poisoning symptoms, they understood that their abusive and heavy drinking was becoming a thorny issue that they could not turn their backs on any longer. All of these questions undoubtedly led to the same conclusion, namely that Linda and Frank needed to discover that they couldn't maintain their abusive and heavy drinking if their plans, dreams, and hopes were to be completed.

Once they settled upon this conclusion, they informed their drinking friends about their their plans to start a family, about their marital plans, and about their goal of buying or building a new house. They also told their drinking pals that they still wanted to hang out with them but that they would be drinking responsibly from this moment forward so that they could begin realizing their future hopes, dreams, and plans.

Shockingly, all of their friends expressed relief because they too had been reappraising their lives and concluded that their life-styles were much too often centered around drinking. They also understood that they would have to change radically if they were to become more adult-like and display more respect for their careers, their health, and for their plans in the next five or ten years.

After their candid discussion with their pals about their hopes, aspirations, and dreams, Frank and Linda in actual fact started to have more significant relationships with all of their buddies. The fundamental reason for this was the fact that all of them had a similar perspective regarding their heavy drinking and their short and long-term aspirations, plans, and goals.
