A Ninth Grader Drinks Excessively With His Friends, Almost Dies From Alcohol Poisoning, And Discovers That Learning Something In Class Can Affect Your Life

Andy was a high school ninth grader who frequently seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had an adventurous personality and usually wanted to do what his older brothers were doing. The core glitch with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were as a result within their legal rights to operate a truck or car and to consume alcohol.

Andy, on the other hand, had a difficult time accepting the fact that as a fifteen-year-old teenager he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, conversely, Andy regularly drank with his high school buddies after school, largely on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy was invited to drive around with some of his older buddies. One of his buddies was old enough to buy alcohol. After buying some wine coolers, wine, and beer, Andy and his cronies went to a park and drank for something like two or three hours.

After drinking more or less six bottles of beer, Andy started to feel nauseous and then threw up. When he lost consciousness on the outdoor basketball court, one of his buddies called 911 for immediate assistance. It was fortunate that the call for emergency help was made because when his guy friends went to the hospital to see Andy, they found out that Andy had been manifesting alcohol poisoning symptoms. More to the point, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.

After getting alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was actually taken aback to ascertain that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had more or less five or ten drinks. When he explained this to the attending physician at the hospital, conversely, the healthcare practitioner informed Andy that drinking five or ten bottles of beer over a two or three hour time frame could certainly be significantly more alcohol than can be processed by the body. The physician further stated how extreme amounts of alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's breathing and that when this happens, an individual can perish.

This was the first word of warning to Andy that he was drinking in a dangerous manner and that there are effects for such actions. The healthcare practitioner told Andy that he was a fortunate young man because he almost perished from alcohol poisoning the previous night.

The doctor also talked to Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol counseling for Andy. His parents were thrilled that Andy was out of harm's way and informed the physician that they would get Andy alcohol rehabilitation.

While conversing with his parents, Andy told them that there must be a good reason why he did not die and that he felt a sense of thanksgiving that he was still alive. He also informed his parents that the peculiar part about the entire drinking situation was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the last six week grading period at school in Mr. Johnson's health class.

At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was saying didn't seem to make too much sense to Andy. Now that he almost passed away, conversely, he felt that he should have listened more thoroughly in class and applied what he had learned to his daily living.

Andy informed his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to Mr. Johnson's classroom and apologize to Mr. Johnson for not paying closer attention to something that was as significant as learning about alcohol poisoning.
