Lenny and Angie have been married for four years. They wanted to experience some excitement and fun before they made up their minds to have some kids and so they consciously developed an incredibly vibrant social life.

The main difficulty, it needs to be pointed out, is that very nearly everything they do with their family and friends somehow includes drinking. For instance, all of the sporting events, dinner engagements, family get-togethers, parties with friends, and happy hours they frequent are related to drinking.

If they were responsible drinkers this wouldn't be such a major issue. Since they drink rather excessively, nevertheless, they are beginning to notice some definite alcohol-related issues in their lives.

For example, just five days ago Lenny was apprehended by the police for his first DWI and has been ignoring responsibilities at work because of alcohol-related health problems. Not only this, but Lenny's last two performance evaluations at the office have been less than creditable and he has begun to forget what he says or does when he drinks. As a final point, Lenny has been experiencing sleep-related problems and his family is starting to get nervous about his drinking circumstances.

In a similar way, Angie has been feeling disheartened about life in general and to come to grips with these feelings, she has been drinking more habitually than any time in the past six months. What is more, Angie has been experiencing quite a few throbbing migraine headaches and having intense hangovers after drinking. As a final point, Angie has been feeling much less active in the morning, she has been showing up late for work, and she has been receiving some damaging criticism from her coworkers, relatives, friends, and family members about her abusive and careless drinking.

One Tuesday evening while watching the television, Angie and Lenny without any planning whatsoever discovered a TV special about alcohol facts and alcoholism facts in general and about the signs of alcoholism in particular. This television special was a real surprise to Angie and Lenny because many of the alcohol facts that were featured gave them the impression that they were undeniably associated with more than a few of the drinking problems Angie and Lenny had been going through.

With thoughts of the television program still imprinted in her mind, Angie asked Lenny if some of the alcohol addiction signs they have been manifesting could mean that they are alcohol dependent or conceivably becoming alcoholic. Lenny didn't know the answer to Angie's inquiry and so he recommended that they make an appointment with one of the physicians at the nearby substance abuse treatment center to find out more about the severity of their drinking issues.

Paradoxically, although their drinking behavior hadn't yet changed, it was noticeable that Lenny and Angie were at the very least addressing their drinking problems, they were ready to find out more about their drinking situation, and they were interested in finding out how they could appreciably decrease or do away with the drinking-related difficulties that had started to escalate.

When Lenny and Angie went to bed that night, they arrived at a decision that the next day, Lenny would call and make an appointment for both of them at the substance abuse rehabilitation clinic located in the middle of town. After they promised one another that they would do whatever it takes to conquer the drinking difficulties that had manifested themselves in their lives, they actually had the most peaceful night's sleep they could bring to mind in the last year.
