A Health Instructor Motivates His Students To Learn More About Symptoms Of Alcoholism, Signs Of Alcoholism, And Alcoholic Symptoms

Mr. Johnson was one of the health instructors at a small rural junior high school in the Midwestern part of the United States. For "Alcohol Comprehension Month" he decided that he would focus on the following three topics for a class assignment: the symptoms of alcoholism, alcoholic symptoms, and the signs of alcoholism.

After Mr. Johnson finalized the topics that would be assigned to his students, he decided that he would supply them with their assignment the following Friday. When "assignment day" finally arrived, Mr. Johnson met with his class, handed out some relevant research literature, and then told his class about the topics he picked.

He then gave the pupils in his class an overview of some noteworthy signs of alcoholism and emphasized how vital it is to learn how to associate these statistics, facts, and symptoms with the real-life experiences of people addicted to alcohol. He then gave his class a brief explanation about the significance of learning more about alcoholics and how they function on a daily basis.

Mr. Johnson told the students in his classroom that they could give their attention to one of the three topics or discuss all three topics and how they are interrelated. In short this would be comparable to a general overview but done in more detail.

Another option that he offered to the pupils in his class was the following: pick a topic such as alcoholism signs and symptoms, dig into things in more detail, and then go over three or four symptoms and signs. Mr. Johnson then pointed out the fact that the same principals apply to the other two topics, namely, the symptoms of alcoholism and alcoholic symptoms.

The end result of their research would be a seven thousand word term paper and then a ten minute oral presentation that would be presented in front of the class. As a reward for their special academic accomplishment, the students with the top four overall grades on the term paper and on the oral presentation will be invited to present the results of their research project at the tri-state alcoholism and alcohol abuse symposium at the end of April.

As noted by Mr. Johnson, since there are numerous alcoholism signs and symptoms to select, he mentioned that he was not too worried about more than one student selecting the same symptoms and signs for their research project. Indeed, even if multiple students were to opt for virtually the same symptoms and signs, the examples that are associated with each sign or symptom would certainly add enough variety to avoid duplication of content.

Mr. Johnson then pointed out the fact that while there are quite a few alcoholism signs and symptoms that could be chosen, the variety of alcoholism facts and statistics that could be discussed were virtually without limit. When the topic of alcoholic symptoms was added to the equation, moreover, the students realized pretty quickly that the three topics would provide a vast amount of material from which to pick.

Why did Mr. Johnson opt for the signs of alcoholism, the symptoms of alcoholism, and alcoholic symptoms as the topics for this assignment? Mr. Johnson thought that by raising the understanding of his students about the negative effects of alcoholism and the dreary daily routines suffered by alcoholics, his students might think twice before they got caught up in irresponsible drinking behavior.
