A Health And Physical Education Instructor Teaches Her Students About The Important Issues Involved In Alcohol Dependency Signs
Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the best known co-ed high school in the state. Although she had been teaching for only four years, she had already obtained a reputation as a teacher with instructional approaches that inspired and motivated students to think and to learn.
For example, one Wednesday afternoon she addressed her pupils and stated the following: "For the next four or five days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a more broad-based perspective and we are also going to learn about several of the most highly researched signs of alcoholism from a less general and more specific point of view."
"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely demonstrate that an individual with a drinking problem is an individual who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that an individual manifests, the greater the possibility that he or she is an alcohol dependent person."
Miss Jackson then explained to the class that each person would be held responsible for investigating three alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the other members in the class by way of a nine minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked her pupils to go over the list and rank the top seven alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After approximately ten minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and explained to the pupils in her class that after she evaluates the numbers, she will discuss her findings the morning of the next school day.
Miss Jackson told her students to look over the information on the sheet of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, questions, or issues. Within 40 or 50 seconds, virtually every pupil in the class raised her or his hand. It was clear to see that the students had some concerns, questions, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism specialists. For example, virtually every individual in the classroom had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism authorities, specifically, "Do you feel awfully ill when you quit drinking?"
Miss Jackson then informed her pupils why this answer was the most unambiguous sign of alcohol dependency. She stressed the fact that the most important difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.
For all intents and purposes this means that when an individual who is alcohol dependent abruptly quits drinking, she or he will go through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the students started to recognize the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.
A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the excitement displayed by the pupils when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson knew that she had inspired and motivated the students in her classroom to stop and think about a critical social problem and health issue that exists in our society.
